As soon as autumn really kicks in, and the real cold and rainy weather arrives, it’s almost impossible to avoid getting sick. If you have kids in your family, the chances are even higher, that you will get a cold during these months… Prevention is key, supporting your immune system with the right supplements is a must, but if you already have the flu I still have some awesome natural remedies for you!

 

Using Antibacterial Soap For Hand Washing

 

Washing your hands often is important in every season, but when the cooler months are at the gate, hand washing can be your biggest ally, in the battle of reducing germs around yourself. Nowadays plenty of personal care brands are offering “antibacterial” soaps on the market, but things made an interesting turn regarding them recently. The FDA (American Food and Drug Administration) banned the “antibacterial soaps” because in their tests they didn’t show any better results than regular soap and water.

“Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water. In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.” said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in a written announcement.  – Quote from Littlegreendot.com 

A lot of antibacterial soaps are containing risky ingredients such as Triclosan which is known to disrupt the endocrine system (especially in children) and to support the so called super bacterias (the germs that are resistant to antibiotics). So what if I say you better create your own antibacterial soap? Just take a bottle of natural liquid soap (such as Dr. Bronner’s castile soap) and “spice it up” with a few drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is one of the strongest natural germ killers, with plenty of other health benefits (anti-fungal, reducing inflammation etc.). Diffusing Essential Oils

 

Even during the cold months the proper airing of your home is crucial. Letting some fresh air in time-to-time balances the humidity and improves air quality in your home. With diffusing the right essential oils, you can support a healthier atmosphere in your environment. The following essential oils and combinations are not only smelling heavenly but also reducing the “airborne” bacterias, therefore promoting less contagious air inside your place.

  • Lemon essential oil is one of the most effective oils to diffuse during the autumn/winter season. It’s also great for households with babies or small kids ( a lot of essential oils are not recommended to use around small children and pregnant women, so be prudent before diffusing any). Depending on the size of the area you’re diffusing in 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil should do it.
  • For adults (under the age of 6 please don’t use this mix) the mixture of lemon and pine can make wonders. (create a mix from 3ml lemon and 2ml pine oils and use it depending on the size of your home)
  • For the little ones the mix of lemon (1ml) vietnamese eucalyptus (2ml) and wild lavender (2ml) can be a great option.

Honey And Ginger

 

The powdered, hot drinks that you can get in the pharmacies or drugstores, are very popular this time of the year – and they’re effective as well – but due to their high levels of paracetamol, it’s very easy to overdose them (especially when combined with other medication). It’s super important – even when taking non-prescribed products – that you’re following the guidelines for the amount you should take.

But did you know that nature has plenty of amazing and naturally effective cold reliefs, that you can take safely and without any side effects? Ginger for example is an awesome immune supporter, with plenty of antibacterial agents such as honey.

In our home we often make a “potion” out of ginger, lemon and honey, to cure or to avoid different cold related illnesses. Boil 1 liter of water, and clean an approximately 5 cm long piece of ginger. Grate the ginger for more power, or just slice it up for regular taste. Put 3 tablespoons of honey into a biiiiiig jar, squeeze half of a lemon into it, throw in the ginger and then pour the hot water over it. Give it a 5 minute rest under a lid and then enjoy (in case it’s too spicy for your taste you can always dilute it with more water.

    I find that keeping a balanced diet and exercising regularly is really good for keeping colds and flu at bay. Whenever I feel a cold coming on, I make sure I do an extra long workout.

  5. This is very informative! Among the tips you mentioned, I only use anti bacterial soap, and of course I always have a hand sanitizer in bag. ^^ I also take vitamin C!

    To keep colds at bay I make sure my nutrition is spot on, get lots of sleep, drink extra water, and up my Vitamin C. Hand washing is another one I’m conscientious of. x

    Essential oils are absolutely needed when fighting the cold and flu! I also like to drink a hot tea with a tablespoon of honey in it!

  9. Vitamin C from natural, whole-food sources is my go-to. Whenever any of my kids get sick, I love to buy them a big bag of oranges to eat for dessert or with breakfast throughout the week.

  12. Ginger is indeed a sort of remedy, but I never try with honey and lemon as I use palm sugar to sweeten it. Cover my head and neck goodly to encounter the cold temperature outside the house is also one of the ways to prevent cold and flu. .

    Lemon oil/balm is my favourite to diffuse especially in the winter because it has a summery feel that makes me forget about the cold weather outside! I wish I liked ginger and honey water but I’m really not a ginger fan :(.
