Your Ultimate Guide To Natural Deodorants*

Your Ultimate Guide To Natural Deodorants*

Now that the days are getting warmer and warmer we have to talk about the importance of the deodorant you are using. My transition to healthy beauty started with switching to an organic aluminium free deodorant because I realized how much of a danger I’ve put myself into. But one thing I have to admit, it’s really hard to find a good and truly effective natural deodorant. I tried plenty and in this post I collected the best ones!

I have to clarify: the following products are DEODORANTS, that means that they are NOT ANTIPERSPIRANTS so they are NOT STOPPING the sweating process. Sweating is a natural thing that helps your body cool down and detoxify itself, and stopping this process is really bad. Deodorants are here to help you to avoid bad body odour, – which happens when sweat meets with the bacteria on the surface of your skin- with eliminating the bad microorganisms.

Traditional deodorants and antiperspirants are mostly operating with aluminium to stop sweating and bad body odour but aluminium can be very damaging to our system. It can cause serious skin irritation to people with sensitive skin and can be a reason of several other health issues.

“Aluminium can accumulate in the kidneys and other important organs like the liver, lungs, thyroid and even brain. Particularly in women, aluminium is known to become concentrated in breast tissues with regular use of antiperspirant deodorants. It is also a recognized neurotoxin that affects the normal functioning of the blood brain barrier and this is believed to be behind a possible link to Alzheimer’s.” – quote from www.healthambition.com

SCHMIDT’S – BERGAMOT+LIME DEO*

Effectiveness: 5
Scent: 5
Application: 3
Total: 13

I’ve previously introduced this product in my Corpo Natura Haul. I like this natural deodorant, I find it really effective, I love the fresh scent of it, the only thing that can be a disadvantage is the sometimes messy application of the creamy texture. But after serious demand from the consumers the brand decided to come up with the stick version which promises the same effect but with a more “comfortable” application.

DR. HAUSCHKA – SAGE AND MINT DEO

Effectiveness: 3
Scent: 4
Application: 5
Total: 12

I had very big expectations towards this roll-on, but it left me quite disappointed. It’s easy to apply, doesn’t leave any stains on clothing and has a nice fresh green scent but unfortunately after a few hours I started to feel  “stinky”. It’s good for very light days, but for the smallest exercise or stress it fails.

EARTH CONSCIOUS – HIPPY PASTE NATURAL DEODORANT LAVENDER*

Effectiveness: 5
Scent: 5
Application: 5
Total: 15

I was pretty happy when the Hippy Paste landed in my mailbox, because it’s not just 100% natural and cruelty free but also makes as minimal impact on the earth as possible (even it’s packaging is reusable). I’ve picked their lavender version that has a very subtle scent and made with essential oils, arrowroot powder and organic shea butter. It worked through the whole day, and left my underarms soft and fresh. It’s a creamy product but it absorbs completely so no mess left behind on your fingers. It’s also very affordable, and until April 2016 they offer free shipping in the EU and in the UK on orders of 2 deos or more so it’s worth to pile up their products before summer kicks in. I want to try their Citrus, Tropical and Mint versions too, I bet they are just as awesome as the Lavender was!

THE OHM COLLECTION – COCONUT POWDER DEODORANT

Effectiveness: 5
Scent: 4
Application: 4
Total: 13

This sodium bicarbonate based product was the biggest surprise to me last year. It’s a really small Dutch brand that I’ve explored in the local organic store at the village where I live. It’s super easy to apply and super effective, keeps me dry all day long. The scent of it is really nice but very subtle, and by the end of the day it transforms a littlebit, which I didn’t really like (it’s not stinky just not as nice as in the morning). The only disadvantage is that I know a lot of people who are sensitive of sodium bicarbonate and it’s roughness (that’s why I had to remove one point from the “application”). We used this product shared with my Hubby and after a while he developed some redness in the underarm area. The good thing is that small samples are available to try so you can test how your skin reacts to this amazing product.

Available at TheOhmCollection.com get in touch with the owners for shipments outside the Netherlands.

MANNA – FLORAL CREAM DEOS

Effectiveness: 4
Scent: 5
Application: 3
Total: 12

Manna is a Hungarian natural beauty brand which I’m truly in love with. (Their soaps are amazing and are staple pieces of our bathroom). With my recent order I’ve purchased a sample package of their cream deos. These deliciously smelling little cuties are great for less busy days, but they couldn’t managed to keep me smell good on stressful working days without reapplying it. The application itself is a bit tricky since they’re all cream based deodorants and they’ve hardened even on room temperature (20-21 Celsius) so I’ve always have to melt them a little while drying my hair.

Available at Mannasoap.uk

I’m currently living in the Netherlands and can buy the OHM Collection deodrants in the beauty salon I go to! I may have to buy it and try it seeing as I have wanted to try a natural deodorant for a while!!
Thank you for the reccomendations x

I suggest you try their sample size first, if that’s available at the salon, just to make sure your skin has no problem with sodium bicarbonate. Anyways, it’s an amazing product I can only recommend it. Currently I’m using their coconut one, but the next buy gonna be the Lavender scented one. 😉

I will see if they do the sample size in the salon! If not, I’ll buy it off the website! I love coconut so will probably have to go with coconut!

  2. When I was a child (I’m in my mid-forties), my father always told us about a horrible boil that his sister developed under one armpit because of antiperspirant. I can’t imagine the pain of having something like that – and then having it lanced without modern painkillers, and the healing process! We weren’t allowed to buy it or use it all. Deodorants, sure, but he constantly reinforced that antiperspirants were dangerous.

Great post outlining different options. I’ll admit that I mostly stick to soap and water, though! 😀

I’m really thinking about trying Hippy Paste, but struggle to decide for which fragrance to go :D.
