How To Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

How To Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful experience, but sure it has it’s own challenges during that amazing 40 weeks; from morning sickness to the changing body and the extra weight gain you have to deal with, but trust me it’s all worth it. But there is one side effect of pregnancy, that scares most women and it’s no else than the appearance of stretch marks. I’m 8 months pregnant at the moment – so far managed without any stretch marks, – so I thought it could be useful to share my tricks and the products I used in order to prevent stretch marks.

Stretch marks happen when your body grows faster than your skin can keep up with. They can show up on your belly, breasts, also on your bottom, tights and in extreme cases on your arms as well. Unfortunately there is no 100% effective way to avoid the appearance of these evil little stripes, (for example if you have a genetic tendency – your mother had them – it’s almost impossible to manage a pregnancy without them appearing). You know you are gonna grow significantly, so you’d better be prepared for that, and do whatever you can, to avoid them. Because once they appear they will stick around for the rest of your life (they can be less visible, but the broken skin can’t ever heal fully).

So what can you do to prevent stretch marks? You have to keep yourself hydrated from the inside and the outside as well. I’m always pushing the issue of how important is to drink enough water a day. When you are pregnant it’s even more important and not just for beauty reasons but for the sake of your own baby’s health too. The regular 2 liters/day should be 2,5-3 liters when pregnant. If your water balance is right it keeps your skin more plump, hydrated and less “fragile”.

If you keep yourself hydrated from the inside it’s still important to help your skin with some extra moisturizer so it can be more elastic and more resistant to stretch marks. I’m using 3 different products at the moment and they all are amazing. Pick whichever is closest to your own preferences and stick to it! You won’t regret. I advise you start using creams/oils the minute you recognize your bump starts to grow, so by the time you reach the “risky” 6th-7th months your skin will be ready to grow.

Vichy – Complete Action Anti-Stretch Cream

This product is not on the green beauty side, but I still have to talk about it, because it’s working pretty good for me. It’s a 2 in 1 product that not just helps preventing stretch marks, but also helps reducing the visibility of the ones that are already appeared. It has a light, almost gelish consistency which absorbs fast and doesn’t leave any greasy feeling behind. A little goes a long way, I’m using the same tube since the 4th month of my pregnancy.

Alive Cosmetics – LÉTA Nourishing Body Cream

If you’ve read my review of Alive Cosmetics you already know, that I’m in love with this natural beauty miracle. The shea and cocoa butters in it are keeping my skin super soft, it absorbs fully and has an amazing citrus smell (thanks to the orange, grapefruit & lemon natural essential oils), that you want to sniff the whole day. It also has a lightening effect on pigment spots and already existing stretch marks. Not to mention all it’s ingredients are raw, pure and natural.

Elemis – Japanese Camelia Body Oil Blend

A product that even Victoria Beckham swears to. The ex Spice Girl tweeted a while ago:

“Pregnancy tip!!!! I have used this through every pregnancy, it’s amazing!! X VB”

And indeed it is. I’ve already introduced it in my post about beauty oils, but I have to include it in here too, since it works magic in my battle against stretch marks. It’s an oil, but it doesn’t feel like one. It’s really easy to use, absorbs fast and not leaving oily feeling behind. It has no scent, so even the ones who are sensitive to perfumed products can use it without hesitation. It’s a bit pricey, but a bottle can last for 6 month or more, so it’s more than enough to keep your skin nourished during the time you need it.

It is so important to keep hydrated during pregnancy. I have been using bio oil which has been working for me. I haven’t really got any stretch marks (besides a few on my breast), so fingers cross it stays that way -touch wood-.
